FAQs
FREQUENTLY ASKED JOB SEARCH QUESTIONS
With our extensive experience of working with both the fashion and lifestyle industries, we have put together a comprehensive list of important questions you may have when applying and interviewing for job opportunities in the creative industry.
Should I write curriculum vitae on my CV?
No. It is very clear what your CV actually is from the information displayed on it.
Why should I write a personal objective?
A personal objective sets the tone for your CV and makes it very clear to the viewer what it is you can offer them and what you are looking to do. If you can convey your suitability and enthusiasm for the role here, this will once again increase your chances of securing an interview.
Do I need a skills profile?
Yes! A skills profile helps the viewer decide whether they should bother to read on. Do you have what they need? Do you have the skills to do the job? If you customise this section for each company you will increase the chances of the employer continuing on through your CV.
Should I list my course modules?
You should list your relevant course modules. Don’t detail anything that won’t strengthen your application. You want to send a very strong clear message that all of your combined experience is relative.
What if I don’t have any relevant work experience?!
Don’t worry! If you don’t have any work experience then you can talk in more detail about your educational experience. Provide information about relevant projects you have worked on as part of your course, what skills you have learnt and how this will be useful in your future career.
Do I need to include all of my previous jobs?
No, especially if you have had a lot of similar positions. Depending on how much space you have on your CV, you may need to be ruthless with your editing. If you have had several retail positions you could talk about these collectively to save space and to prevent repetition.
Do I need to include an interests section on my CV?
It isn’t necessary to include an interests section. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to portray your enthusiasm for the industry and list hobbies that support your application and desire to work within the industry.
How many references should I include on my CV?
You actually don’t need to include any references on your CV. If you have enough space you could include a maximum of two. However, there is much more valuable information that should go on your CV. An employer will be satisfied if they are made aware that references are available should they require them.
Can my CV be a bit longer than 2 A4 sides?
No. An average employer will receive over 100 applications for one vacancy. If your CV is longer than 2 A4 sides it will be dismissed instantly. There is too much information for the viewer to process and it will be assumed that you cannot be concise. If you are having problems fitting your CV onto 2 A4 sides (even after ruthless editing) try reducing the margins and using a more space effective layout.
Should I add a photograph of myself onto my CV?
No. Unless the company specifically asks for your photograph do not include one with your application. Adding an image of yourself onto your CV is creating an opportunity for an employer to discriminate against you based on appearance. How you look has no bearing on your ability to fulfil a job role.
